Once You have made the decision to buy a dog, you have various options. Do you want a puppy, an adult dog, or even an older dog? Would you rather have a bitch or a dog?
When choosing a Stafford, it is advisable to buy a pedigree dog. Of course, the question also arises as to where to get your dog from, a private person, a breeder, or from an animal shelter? It is important for you and the animal that you sort out all these things in advance, as you want to make sure that you get a dog that suits your circumstances.
ARE YOU READY FOR THE STAFFORDSHIRE?
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier offers the potential owner many advantages. This is a very easy-care dog; obedient, smooth-coated, intelligent and remarkably healthy. For an active dog owner who is willing to spend quality time with a dog, the Staffordshire is an excellent choice. The breed's dedication to home and family, its protective nature and its good-hearted spirit make a Staffordshire a king among canines In the hands of a responsible owner, the Staffordshire has few flaws.
The question remains, are you that responsible owner? Make no mistake: you will be the beginning, middle and end of your Staffordshire's world. This is not a dog you can ignore. You will be his favourite friend, walking companion, snoozing lap and dinner chum. Are you ready to 'own' an unconditional best friend whom you raise from the tender age of 7-8 weeks? Staffordshires abound in energy, more so than the average dog. They seek companionship and entertainment, and they love to entertain!! An active, if not athletic, individual is the best owner for the Staffordshire. Your Staffordshire will enjoy an afternoon cycling or jogging on the beach, running aside you on horseback or playing chase in the garden. These kinds of activities keep the Staffordshire healthy in mind and body.
WHO SHOULD OWN A STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER?
What kind of person should own a Staffordshire? As much as we love and cherish these dogs, they are not the dog for everyone. There are many special considerations that must be taken into account before the decision to own a Staffordshire is made. It must be remembered that one is dealing with a breed that is "blessed" with a combination of the wily thinking ability of a terrier and the determination to follow through of a Bulldog.
Staffords are housedogs: First and foremost, the Staffordshire is a people dog. The breed is not suited to being isolated from the people it loves, nor can the short-coated Stafford withstand weather extremes. Severe cold and heat could cost a Stafford his life.
Secured yards are necessary: Staffordshires are loyal but easily bored. The Stafford is an active dog, and boredom can tae even the most devoted dog under and over fences that would stump most other breeds. Staffordshires love people, and they are not advere to accepting an invitation to take a stroll with a passing child or hop into the car of a total stranger. For this reason, the Staffordshire owner must have a securely fenced yard.
No unfenced swimming pools: The average Staffordshire is only a middle-class swimmer, but he does love the water. There have been accidents, even where pools have been completely fenced in because someone inadvertentley left the gate open. You ust be sure that your Stafford can swim if the dog is going to be anywhere near your pool, and you must be sure he knows how how and where to get out of the pool.
No one who wants a "macho" or aggresive dog need apply: A home that encourages aggressive behaviour is not the home for a Staffordshire. A Staffordshire that is goaded into a fight is something you do not want to see!
